This month we will be flexing our creative muscles with a few fun, Halloween-themed improv and composition activities!

An easy way to get your students thinking like a composer is to start by "spook-ifying" a familiar piece! In this activity, students will experiment with the musical elements of mode, pitch, tempo, dynamics, and articulation to turn "Mary Had a Little Lamb" into a spooky masterpiece! The two " bonus challenge" activities give students more practice with understanding how the various musical elements can affect the mood of a piece. Click HERE for your free PDF. (P.S. The Classics for Kids website has a great activity sheet that will guide students through listening to "In the Hall of the Mountain King," as described in the first bonus challenge. You can find the free PDF for it HERE.) |
For the reluctant composers in your studio, this fun "witches' brew" composition activity sets students up for success by providing the building blocks for creating a jazzy Halloween piece. Students can choose the measures for their melody, select an ending, and notate their composition on the staff template that is also included. Click HERE for your free PDF. |
Finally, if you have students that don't celebrate Halloween, check out this fall-themed improv/composition activity that can be customized for beginning to intermediate-level students. Click HERE for your free PDF. |
