Friday Funny

12/23/2016

I haven't posted a Friday Funny in a while, but I have to share this one since it happened just this week!

With my holiday break approaching, I found that I, like my students, have had a bad case of "vacation brain" this week. On Wednesday I was preparing to leave to teach my last lessons of the year. I was thinking ahead to the other tasks on my plate before Christmas as I put on my coat and grabbed my teaching bag.

As I walked out the front door, I looked down and realized that instead of putting on my coat, I had instead put on my bathrobe! Luckily I noticed my mistake before I got in the car to leave. I think my subconscious was trying to tell me that it was time for a break. :)

Wishing all of you who celebrate a very happy (and relaxing!) holiday this week. See you in 2017!

Something I am trying to do more often in my lessons is to play for my students--not just demonstrating their pieces, but actually playing short excerpts of familiar Classical pieces to introduce students to more advanced literature.

For better of for worse, one of my go-to pieces for this activity is "Fur Elise." I find that it is easily recognizable and demonstrates dynamics and pedaling in a way that is accessible to students.

So, when I started to play "Fur Elise" for one of my young students recently, I was pleased when he claimed. "I know that! I know that!"

I smiled, ready to discuss Beethoven and his many well-loved pieces, when the student continued,

"That's the song my mom's cell phone plays!"

This Friday funny happened with one of my six year old students who is very bright and loves music. Before she started lessons and got a full size piano, she had a small toy keyboard that she liked to play with. Her parents now keep this keyboard in the car to occupy her and her younger brother on long trips.

I always know when we have a good lesson and my student is super excited about her new songs, because she will run out the front door saying, "I've got to get to my car piano!"  :)
