Free Landmark Note Worksheets!

A great way to build strong note-reading skills is by teaching "landmark" notes: notes on the staff that are easy for students to memorize and identify quickly.

The landmark notes that I have found to be the most helpful for my students are shown in the picture on the left.

To help students practicing identifying and drawing these landmark notes, today I am sharing six free worksheets that you can use with your students! Each worksheet focuses on just 2-3 of the landmark notes pictured above. Click on the photos below to download each set of PDF worksheets.

Worksheets 1 and 2:
Treble G, Bass F, and Middle C.

Students learn to use the treble and bass clefs to find these landmark notes quickly.

Worksheets 3 and 4:
The 3 C's: treble, middle, and bass C.

Students learn to count 3 spaces up or 3 spaces down on the staff to find treble and bass C.

Worksheets 5 and 6:
"Ground" G and "Floating" F, plus a review of drawing the 3 C's.

The terms "ground" G and "floating" F are great hints to help students remember the locations of these landmark notes.

Perfect! I have a student using Piano Town which introduces bass clef f and treble clef g as landmark notes. (I only just switched to using P.T. and my previous series just based both hands at middle c and worked outward... so this approach is new for me.) He's been struggling from using pre-staff notation to now all of a sudden both clefs and both hands. These worksheets will be so helpful for him. Thank you! Thank you so much--I love these. I can't wait to try them out on some of my students struggling with note reading. I teach the Mayron Cole Method which I really love, but some of my transfer students struggle so much with note reading.

I really like your modified version of the Landmark system. When I read about the original landmarks on line, I realized it made more sense if I used the landmarks you were suggesting (though at this time, I hadn't come across your web site yet and didn't know you were recommending them).
It was very helpful to have an expert piano teacher agree with what I was thinking as being a beginner-intermediate student I prefer not to modify things that have been around for years. So thak you very much. Also Your learning sheets are excellent too.
