Rock On!

I am excited to announce the release of my newest Composers Community project: a rock songbook! "Rock On!" features 10 original piano solos for late beginner to early intermediate students.

You may recall from my previous post on rock music (here) that it is a genre I love to teach. My goal with this book was to not only write music that is fun to play, but to also to teach students about rhythm, harmony, and form found in rock music. You will find pieces featuring common rock chord progressions, pieces in song form, and lots of great rhythmic challenges for students in levels 2 and 3 of most method books.

This book also features pieces inspired by a variety of rock genres, including blues rock ("Low Down"), reggae rock ("Groovin'"), metal ("Edge"), and even folk rock/country ("Gone"). I think there is truly something for every student.

Along the way, I also sneak in some great teaching moments, like playing a left hand melody ("Chill"), using rotation ("Changes"), counting sixteenth note patterns ("Sweet!"), playing in 6/8 time ("Over It"), and many more! But your students don't have to know that. :)

This collection was so much fun for me to write. If you would like to see and hear the music from this book, click HERE.

And, rock on!

Halloween Repertoire, Part Two

Where I live, fall is in the air. The weather is cooling; the days are growing shorter. Students are getting back into the swing of things with school, homework, and extra-curricular activities. It is a perfect time of year to start some fresh music, and my students are always extra-excited to play anything with a Halloween theme!

This week I would like to introduce you to some of my own Halloween themed pieces. I have grouped them by level, and I even include some fun Halloween duets! Take a listen, if you dare! Click on the title to see where to purchase the music.

Today, I will be featuring piano solos and a duet for intermediate and advanced students!

In the Valley of the Kings

This spooky early intermediate piece is inspired by the Valley of the Kings, the site of many of the tombs of the ancient Egyptian pharoahs.

Mountain King Rag

This fun ragtime piece is a playful nod to Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King.” A perfect early intermediate showcase solo for Halloween, or any time of year!

The Siren

This advanced piano solo is inspired by the nocturnes of Chopin and Barber and depicts the seductive but deadly song of the siren, a creature who according to legend lured countless sailors to their deaths.

Midnight Scherzo

This intermediate level piano duet is a showstopper! The use of hand crossings, glissandos, and grace notes give this scherzo a virtuosic sound, however the music is carefully written for the intermediate student and fits under the hands well.

Into the Storm

Into the Storm is a fast and flashy showcase solo for mid- to late-beginners. Quick chromatic patterns and showy hand crossings give this piece virtuosic appeal!

Hide and Sneak

This elementary level piece reinforces note reading across the entire grand staff and helps students to practice playing changes in articulation and dynamics, as well as using the damper pedal.

Midnight in Buenos Aires

This mischievous minor piece is inspired by the tango, a dance native to Argentina.

Ceremony at Stonehenge

This haunting minor piece features a
fast middle section. This piece is featured on the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival piano solo list (Primary Class IV).

Knock, Knock, Knock!

Knock, Knock, Knock! is an evenly-leveled duet for late-beginners. This piece is sneaky, jazzy fun for all ages!

Something I am trying to do more often in my lessons is to play for my students--not just demonstrating their pieces, but actually playing short excerpts of familiar Classical pieces to introduce students to more advanced literature.

For better of for worse, one of my go-to pieces for this activity is "Fur Elise." I find that it is easily recognizable and demonstrates dynamics and pedaling in a way that is accessible to students.

So, when I started to play "Fur Elise" for one of my young students recently, I was pleased when he claimed. "I know that! I know that!"

I smiled, ready to discuss Beethoven and his many well-loved pieces, when the student continued,

"That's the song my mom's cell phone plays!"
