For better of for worse, one of my go-to pieces for this activity is "Fur Elise." I find that it is easily recognizable and demonstrates dynamics and pedaling in a way that is accessible to students.
So, when I started to play "Fur Elise" for one of my young students recently, I was pleased when he claimed. "I know that! I know that!"
I smiled, ready to discuss Beethoven and his many well-loved pieces, when the student continued,
"That's the song my mom's cell phone plays!"
