But, just what is Synthesia, and how can these videos help you and your students? Keep reading to learn more!
You may not be familiar with Synthesia, but I bet many of your students are! Synthesia is software that takes a MIDI recording and turns it into a video that shows you each key that is being played on the piano in a piece of music, like this:
Your students may already be learning some of their favorite songs using these types of videos on YouTube. I have found several benefits to using these videos with my students:
These videos make great practice aids. Encourage students to use these as reference as they are practicing at home with their sheet music during the week!
These videos work well for students whose playing level exceeds their reading level. These can be great supplemental material to help students play more sophisticated pieces than they are able to read right now. And, as a bonus...
These videos give you the opportunity to teach popular songs using a rote-to-reading approach. Have students learn first from watching the video, then study the sheet music together and make the connection between sound and symbol.
