The first piano lesson of the new year is a time for both reflection and renewal; a time to look back upon all the hard work of the previous year and to set new goals for the year to come.
I designed this handy free printable that you can use with your students to do both of those things at their first lesson of the year!
The top part of this sheet is a place for students to write their “repertoire list”—their favorite pieces of the past year. I tell my students that every piece on this repertoire list should be performance ready, and I reserve the right to request a performance of any of these pieces at their lesson at any time. I also encourage students to have at least two of these repertoire pieces memorized—you never know when you will be asked to play for an audience, and your books might not always be handy.
The bottom of this sheet features room for students to create a “wish list.” This is the place for students to write down anything they would like to work on in the coming year. This list could include specific pieces, musical styles, composer names, or even projects such as compose a new piece, play a piece by ear, etc. The sky’s the limit! Refer to this wish list any time a student needs a motivational boost, or a bit of a challenge. Encourage student to seek out new music and to keep updating this wish list throughout the year.
